Tartar and gingivitis are easily visible during a routine health check which may prompt your vet to recommend a de-scale and polish and full oral examination. It is not possible to perform a complete dental health examination until your pet is under a general anaesthetic. This means it is difficult to provide an accurate estimate for the dental at the time of booking. We understand it is important to have a good idea of costs in advance of any procedure, so we have created this information sheet to help explain the potential costs. Your veterinarian can also give you an indication of the most likely cost.

Dental procedures involve a thorough oral examination under general anaesthetic, a de-scale and polish, dental x-rays and, if necessary, teeth are removed.

CANINE DENTISTRY

De-Scale and Polish with no extractions Approx £350 – £450
Dental with up to 6 extractions Approx £700 – £950
Dental with multiple extractions >6 Approx £1000 – £1500

Please note, the prices include Intravenous Fluid Administration, general anaesthetic and monitoring, de-scale and polish and take home medications

We recommend pre anaesthetic blood testing, particularly in older patients. This is an additional £85. This will provide us with information on your pet’s organ function and how we may need to support them during their procedure.

*The weight of your dog and the complexity of extractions required will effect where they fall in the estimates below*

FELINE DENTISTRY

De-Scale and Polish with no extractions Approx £350
Dental with up to 6 extractions Approx £650
Dental with multiple extractions >6 Approx £1000

Please note, the prices include Intravenous Fluid Administration, General Anaesthetic and monitoring, de-scale and polish, dental x-rays and take home medications

We recommend pre anaesthetic blood testing, particularly in older patients. This is an additional £85. This will provide us with information on your pet’s organ function and how we may need to support them during their procedure.

We perform dental x-rays before starting any of the treatment needed. This is because cats suffer with a disease unique to their species- Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions (FORLs) whereby the enamel of the tooth is slowly resorbed leaving the underlying sensitive structures exposed. This may not be immediately evident just by looking at the teeth but is shown on x-ray as the tooth losing definition. The periodontal ligament, that surrounds the tooth root becomes ill-defined and the pulp cavity less evident. This becomes more severe over time until the tooth takes on a ghost like quality. These teeth become uncomfortable and liable to fracture leaving the cat in discomfort.

When making a decision about how to extract these teeth, there are two options: A full extraction, removing the roots and crown of the tooth; or a crown amputation, where we remove only the crown of the tooth, as the root has been almost completely resorbed. The reason a crown amputation may be chosen as the preferred method is to minimise trauma to the surrounding structures.

Dental xray will be performed again after the procedure to ensure all non-resorbing root fragments have been thoroughly removed.
